Use of the term ‘compete’ refers to having the opportunity of being on an equal playing field with others who are less disadvantaged; improved access and outcomes being the result. Whilst we work with young people aged 9 upwards, our core group is secondary school age and beyond.

We offer a range of support services and academic qualifications including; education, training, mentoring, employment and social participation following a youth work approach, tailored to meet individual needs.Underpinning the whole ethos of City United, are its Values, the principles of which focus on professionalism, innovation and fun.

Special Educational Needs
Pupil progress is constantly monitored and assessed and careful records are kept. Occasionally we may find that a pupil does not make the progress we expect. If this were the case, parents would be consulted and appropriate steps to support the child taken. An Individual Education Plan may be made with individual targets, review dates and ideas to help parents to support their child at home.

CUL Academy will ensure that our commitment to equality of opportunity in service provision matches that of staff recruitment and retention. We recognise that our clients come from a variety of cultural groups and thus have different needs. Our aim is to meet the global needs of our service users whilst ensuring no service user is treated less favourably on the grounds of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, race, religion and culture.
Our premises have been audited by Birmingham Disability Resource Centre to ensure it is suitable for disabled service users and staff.
- Representatives of their local authority, the education services, Social Services or Health Authority formally refer young people to CUL Academy.
- Initial contact is made to the school through the Head or a Senior Manager/Teacher of the school. A meeting of all parties concerned is convened to agree a plan of action for the commencement of the school placement.
- Local authority staff, social workers, parents and prospective pupils are welcome to visit the school prior to any formal referral being made, during the referral process and subsequent placement.
- All visits are made by prior arrangement with the Head Teacher and parents/stakeholders are provided with details of our Child Protection Policy on request.
CUL Academy takes social responsibility very seriously and aims to promote good practice and strong governance at management level complying with current legislation in a transparent and ethical manner. A child protection policy and safeguarding policy are in place and are reviewed regularly. CUL Academy is guided by and adheres to set policies and procedures that are produced in accordance with DFE guidelines. All of our board have previous experience managing premises, working for community development projects, independent schools and the local authority. Combined we feel we have the skills needed to run such a project.
